Paul Haslinger is an Austrian composer who hails from Linz, Upper Austria.
Background[]
Haslinger studied classical music, before joining the band Tangerine Dream in 1986. In 1991, Haslinger was nominated for a Grammy Award for his work on the film Canyon Dreams. One year later, he split from Tangerine Dream to work as a solo musician, forming his own music studio and releasing three solo albums.
In 2000, Haslinger moved to film composition, making his debut with the TV film Cheaters. First time director John Stockwell was so impressed with Haslinger's work that he has hired Haslinger for every film he has made since. Since then, Haslinger has scored music for dozens of films, including Shoot 'Em Up, Crank, Death Race and its sequel, and Vacancy.
Haslinger began scoring music for video games in 2005, and has since recorded music for Rainbow Six Vegas, X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Far Cry Instincts.
In recent years, a core group of collaborators has established itself around Haslinger, including jazz trumpet player Jon Hassell, Brian Williams (aka Lustmord), guitarists Adam Jones of the band Tool and Peter Maunu, Lebanese musician AJ Racy, and singers Sussan Deyhim, Nona Hendryx and Lori Carson. This group was prominently featured in the score for the Showtime Mini Series, Sleeper Cell. The music for Sleeper Cell I: The Enemy Is Here earned Haslinger his first Emmy Award nomination in 2006.
Most recently, Haslinger scored the music for the 2011 film, The Three Musketeers.
Underworld[]
Haslinger has written the score for three films in the Underworld series. The original Underworld marked the first film Haslinger had scored for that opened number one at the box office. He was then called back in 2009 and 2012 to score the music for Underworld: Rise of the Lycans and Underworld: Awakening.
