The Silver Nitrate Bomb is the evolved rendition of the main defense against Lycans, silver. It contains silver nitrate gas, which is deadly to those infected with Lycanthropy. When it explodes, beyond the potent area of explosion which is already enough to kill and incapacitate most, the blast also disperses the nitrate gas into the air. All Lycans that are within close proximity of this gas are burnt in a similar manner as a Vampire would be under direct sunlight. Humans, Vampires and Hybrids, however, are not affected by the Silver Nitrate Gas, although the explosion can still hurt and even kill them if they are close enough to be affected by the blast.

The weapon was likely developed from a bullet created by the Death Dealer leader, Kahn, which contained liquid silver that would eject into a Lycan's bloodstream upon impact.

When the Death Dealers were infiltrating the Lycan Den, Kahn throws one Silver Nitrate Bomb down on the lair's entrance, killing Pierce, Taylor, and several other Lycans who were nearby.

The IPU SWAT teams are known to have been used several of this grenades during the Purges. The Police Departments also have access to these explosives as when Detective Sebastian takes Selene to the Police department's locker, where several of this grenades were stashed.

Selene uses several of these bombs during her attack on Antigen Headquarters, killing dozens of Antigen's Lycans guards in the process. A silver nitrate grenade is also used to kill Quint Lane, when the bomb is stuffed inside his stomach by Selene. Detective Sebastian also kills some guards with a grenade launcher equipped with these explosives.
